Chapter 285 of Berserk was quite well done. While I am itching to see more of Gattsu and his group now, Griffith has really got himself set up rather well. With the highest secular and religious support he could ask for, the people now being turned towards him as a result of this, and the knowledge that he will be king once he regains the kingdom... his dream has almost been fulfilled! For things to go so well for Griffith, surely something has to go right for Gattsu now!
With episodes 34-39, I completed Saiunkoku Monogatari. While never quite reaching the hights of its cousin, Juuni Kokki, this still managed to be an excellent series. The characters exhibited plenty of depth and we saw an impressive degree of growth in them over the course of the series. The plot was also quite remarkable, and featured some excellent execution. One of the few titles that manages to successfully switch between comedy and drama, this was easily one of the better serials I have ever seen, and I can hardly wait to begin watching the second season.
I also completed Le Chevalier D'Eon, with episodes 22-24. A well executed series with interesting characters and a rather complex plot, yet it still seemed to miss the mark somehow. While an above-average series, it seemed to fail to reach the level of excellence, though at the moment I cannot put my finger on why this was. The series featured excellent visuals most of the time, and features much meaningful character development. The way it tied the events of the series into history was quite interesting too, though not quite as enjoyable as the likes of Versailles no Bara.
Continuing Les Miserables with epispdes 4 and 5, I am beginning to find this series a real struggle. While I am quite interested to see how things develop, I also find each and every one of the characters painfully anoying to watch. Since I have not read the novel, I cannot identify whether this is a failing of Nippon Animation, or if I simply would not have enjoyed the original either, but I may not follow this series much further whatever it is.
The first episode of Seto no Hanayome was a major disappointment too. While the premice sounded rather interesting, I quickly found the execution to be painful beyond words. Indeed, there is no question that this would be the worst title I have seen for the new season! Horrid characters, so-so visuals, and utterly painful viewing, I could not even quite struggle through to the end of the episode. It is not often I give up so early on a series, but it is not often I watch something so utterly wretched to begin with!
On the other hand, the first episode of Wellber no Monogatari showed great promise. While the OP sequence featured some rather horrid looking `flashy' sequences at times, the general look of the series is quite nice, with fluid animation and pleasing colours. The characters seem quite interesting, and the plot looks excellent. While I have some concerns, particularly with the think-tank, this series looks like it has an awful lot of potential.
